Teaching your Kids About Money

without comments

Tanya BlackI am very fortunate to have the mother I do. She taught me the value of money, how to budget, save, invest and more importantly, how to challenge myself. I spent my teenage years renovating houses and learning how to paint, tile, run wires, plaster and strip wallpaper. At the time, it didn’t seem like the best way to be spending my down time, but I now value it as an apprenticeship.

I often discuss finances and teach my own children about money, how it’s earned and how it works. Last week, I was telling them about my upcoming exhibit at Somaspace and they were very interested. They asked losts of questions and wanted to contribute a piece themselves.

I set up their canvases and watched as they lovingly applied every stroke. They were so focused on making sure these paintings were perfect because they considered them to be the most important paintings they’d ever done. They didn’t place the importance on exhibiting their work though, I’d told them that if they sold their paintings, they could spend the money however they wanted (at which point they will get a tangible lesson in exchange rates and GDP).

The Bear - Dominic Black

The boys have been at their father’s house since Sunday night and when we were having our catch up chat on Monday he told me how excited the boys were about the art show and it was all they would talk about.

Elijah, my entrepreneurial 3 year old had really taken to the concept. On Sunday night, he destroyed his pillow, so Daddy told him, that it was a silly thing to do because now he didn’t have a pillow to sleep on, to which Elijah responded nonchalantly, ‘Doesn’t matter, I’ll sell a painting and buy a new one’.

Some days they make me so proud.
